Physical Lab
Απρίλιος 10, 2017

Physical Lab is an international laboratory for performance that trains and develops emerging and established artists.

It is based in the UK and it runs regularly in Paris, Marseille, Munich, Athens, Crete, Nicosia, Istanbul, New York, The Hague, Tartu and other.

THE WORK

The point of entry is the body. The training consists of; physical and grounding techniques, physical and vocal training, exploration of impulses, ensemble work, improvisation, exploring words and ownership of text and building a character and performance.

The outcome is impulsive, pleasurable and effortless performances that are rooted within the essence of the performers.

The methodology offers tools and exercises that support the activation of all the senses, and the energy within the body, as well as the connection with emotions, one’s physicality, voice and imagination.

More information and video footage of the work that is taking place at the laboratory can be found here: www.physicallab.co.uk

WHERE

The residency takes place at the inspiring Arts Centre of Haroupomilos – The Carob Mill Arts Centre, which is curated by an inspiring lady – Korina Miliaraki.
The Arts Centre is an ex-carob mill factory that has been converted to a stylish and traditional arts centre. It is located at the traditional and beautiful village of Panormo, in Crete. Nearest Airport is Heraklion.
Info and video of the arts centre can be found here:https://www.epimenides.gr/en/home/

WHAT DOES THE RESIDENCY PROVIDE

The residency provides accommodation (included in the price), and invites its artists to a communal experience living at the The Carob Mill Arts Centre.

Organic breakfast is also provided (included in the price), and will be served every morning at the Arts Centre.

Lunch and dinner is not provided (and is not included in the price), but vouchers will be provided which will offer generous discounts to two local tavernas and a delicious creperie, who will be supporting the residency.

Discounted massage and reiki sessions will be provided for the visiting artists of the residency with Konstantinos – the local practitioner who won the best impressions last April!

If you do not wish to live at the Mill, there is an alternative option for accommodation: We have reserved single, double and four-bed rooms for the period of the residency. This will be arranged at an extra cost but for very affordable prices especially created for the visiting artists. Full information at the end of this announcement .

TESTIMONIALS

(from ther artists who attened the residency last April)

‘Challenging and inspiring work, time to reflect, space to move, glorious sunshine, incredible food, Cretan hospitality, beautiful beaches- what more could any artist (or human) possibly want?»

«I’ve trained with Yorgos for some time now and, while every workshop offers something new, the Crete residency was truly unique. The work and the environment compliment eachother so completely and the immersive experience of living/working at the mill was both inspiring and relaxing in a way you’d never find here in the UK. Through the residency I connected with several artists and performers who have become close friends and collaborators. I cannot reccommend this opportunity enough.’

Katie Stephen

‘The Carob Mill in Panormo is a unique place to train, rehearse and live. On the one hand a safe and enclosed space with everything a performer needs to concentrate on his or her art.
On the other hand: The moment you step out of the Mill you see the sea, you taste the delicious Cretan food and get to know the warm and friendly hosts of this picturesque litte village.
All of which contributes to this exceptional experience of a Physical Lab on this island.

The Carob Mill is also a perfect place for Yorgos Karamalegos’ work. With his methodology there’s space for space. For breath, grounding and a process that is different for everyone.

With Yorgos I learned to trust in my process, even if it feels weird, silly or stuck at times. His work of grounding gives me the opportunity to always rely on my body and so I was able to develop performance moments and ideas I never thought I could develop.
Yorgos is a patient and very observant teacher. You feel his years of experience with every moment you work with him.
He’s very passionate about his art and is on a constant search for authenticity on stage and in his performers. The moment you find this – and believe me, everyone will find at least one authentic and really true moment on stage in his workshops – you’ll want to come back again and again, like I do.
It’s beautiful to see that many others come back again as well.
So every time I go to a Physical Lab I have the opportunity to meet new performers and to reconnect with the ones I’ve already worked with.
And last but not least: Yorgos is one of the nicest people I’ve ever met, he’s a utterly non-judgemental teacher and human being.
It is a pleasure working with him.’
